NCAA Basketball:Georgetown Coach John Thompson III On Heat Seat
Even though the Hoyas won 74-65 over Rutgers on Saturday January, 15,...
Nnamdi Asomugha is one of the most coveted free agent defensive players in the NFL. Rumors of up to at least fifteen teams have expressed legitmitate interest in acquiring Asomugha’s excellent shutdown corner ability. The Jets and Packers were thought to be the initial leaders. However, Asomugha has backed off those two choices and the 49ers have the inside track on significantly upgrading their secondary by landing Nnamdi Asomugha for five big reasons.
1. West Coast Guy- Asomugha has been in California for most of his life and he wants to stay there. The Jets and Packers do not appeal to Asomugha because he enjoys playing and living in warmer weather. Asomugha does not want to start over, which means the choices of teams he would consider playing for are very limited. Asomugha will play for the Chargers, 49ers or Raiders, but the 49ers have the inside track.
2. Coach Jim Harbaugh- Norv Turner is not going to last two more seasons in San Diego. The Raiders will not keep the same head coach more than a few seasons. However, the 49ers will keep newly hired Jim Harbaugh around for at least 5 seasons. Asomugha wants to be a part of a team that has long term head coaching stability. Since the 49ers are the only team in California with long term stability, the 49ers are the most logical choice to sign Asomugha.
3.49ers Plan To Play More Man Coverage Next Season- Coach Harbaugh is going to have the defense blitz more than they did last season. There will be a lot more pressure on the corners to become excellent man coverage defenders. Nate Clements and Nnamdi Asomugha would be an excellent cornerback combination. Vance Joseph, the secondary coach, has been with the 49ers since 2005 and would help Asomugha become even more dominant when he joins the team.
4. Deion Sanders Factor- Any player who wears the number 21 is making a personal tribute to Deion Sanders. Sanders is the measuring stick for all cornerbacks. Asomugha wears 21. Asomugha has a chance to join the 49ers and help the team return to their winning ways. He can come in and show he is equal to or better than Sanders covering receivers in a San Francisco uniform like Sanders used to. The opportunity is simply to appealing to pass up. Asomugha has already demonstrated that he is more physical than Sanders by his eagerness to come up and make tackles. Coming to San Francisco would enhance his legacy. Asomugha and Gore will have to work something out since Gore currently wears 21, but the opportunity to win is to great for both players not to get the number issue quickly resolved.
5.UWBA- Being the ambassador for the United Way Of the Bay Area is one of the positions that Asomugha highly values. UWBA is going to be an organization that Asomugha will be involved in throughout the rest of his playing career. Asomugha can keep his personal and professional life in tact, if he joins the 49ers. The 49ers have made the offseason moves that will help them start to return to their traditonal winning ways. Winning the NFC West consistently and possibly a Superbowl is not out of reach. The fans and organization should be excited because clearly the 49ers are the most logical fit for Asomugha.
