NFL Rumors: Steve Smith Leaning Towards Chicago Bears

Steve Smith

Steve Smith does not want to be a part of the rebuilding process in Carolina.  Entering his eleventh season the lockout may give him the needed rest to fully heal from all of his injuries.  The team that should trade for him and could use his services the most to make a Superbowl run is the Chicago Bears.

Jay Cutler
Cutler is currently in the doghouse with fans in Chicago after not finishing the NFC Conference Championship game against the Packers.  However, Cutler is capable of making tremendous throws and really likes to use the middle of the field.  Steve Smith is an excellent route runner and gets separation from defenders, which would help Cutler limit his mistakes.  Smith makes tough catches in traffic, which would help Cutler out when he tries to squeeze certain throws into tight windows. Jay Cutler should lobby hard for the Bears to trade for Steve Smith.

Devin Hester
Hester is still an emerging receiver for the Bears, but has not quite developed into a quality Number One receiver. Steve Smith is still capable of being a quality Number One receiver for a football team.  If the Bears traded for Smith more opposing defenses would focus on stopping Smith, which would free up Hester to make more game changing plays in the passing game.

Mike Martz- Offensive Coordinator
Mike Martz largely swallowed his pride this season and did not fully open up the playbook for Jay Cutler this season because he feared that Cutler would throw to many interceptions.  But deep down Martz likes to run three and four receiver formations.  It had to eat Martz up to watch Green Bay have so much success running plays that are similar to the style of plays he likes to call in Superbowl XLV. If the Bears get Smith, Martz will start spreading opposing defenses out, which will help the Bears’ passing game become more potent.

Steve Smith Will Connect With Bears’ Fans
Steve Smith plays the game with a lot of emotion, fire and passion. Since Cutler does not show much emotion on the field, the fans would love to trade for a player who does. Soldier Field would be filled with fans wearing Steve Smith jerseys because of the fearless way he plays the game. Smith often plays through injuries and Smith generally makes tremendous catches throughout a game. The Bears need to trade for Steve Smith.

Superbowl Run
The Bears have a strong defense. The Bears have excellent special teams.  The Bears need a playmaking wide receiver to significantly upgrade the offense.  Steve Smith is the answer.  Steve Smith gives the Bears a chance of not only matching up against the Packers, but a chance if the team can stay healthy to win a Superbowl. The Bears need to trade for Steve Smith after the lockout.

Martz wasn’t afraid of the interceptions–in fact, he’s often said he doesn’t care about interceptions.  He was afraid that the line could not protect Cutler and that he would get killed.

    Fbonacci:
I appreciate your comments. But most people understand that Cutler has the tendency to try and squeeze the ball into tight spots, which can lead to tips and many interceptions. If you think that would not concern Mike Martz, then I will respectfully disagree. Martz telling the world that he does not care about interceptions and turnovers is just a media answer that someone like Martz says to protect and stand in the corner of the quarterback, but if he really meant that he would be saying he does not value his job. There always has to be concern with quarterback decision making because it either keeps you hired or quickly fired. The Bears have some line issues, but Cutler needs to be more careful with the football. Bad decision making vs. trying to make a play is a fine line and Cutler must do better in this area for the Bears to reach their potential. Thanks for your support.
