NCAA Basketball:Georgetown Coach John Thompson III On Heat Seat
Even though the Hoyas won 74-65 over Rutgers on Saturday January, 15,...
There generally is an expectation that when you win the slam dunk competition that you will try to defend that title. With LeBron James currently contemplating entering his first slam dunk competition, the stage was set for what could have been a historic slam dunk showdown between him and Blake Griffin.
Griffin jumped over a car last season, while Bron jumped completely over John Lucas this season. The anticipation from fans around the world would have been ridiculous if the two superstars were set to face each other in a slam dunk competition. Maybe ego is the biggest factor but for some reason it looks like Grif is currently running scared, backing down, and just may be a little afraid of possible losing to “King” James.
Commenting on his plans to not enter the slam dunk competition, Griffin recently stated, “As of right now I don’t plan on being in it. Those dunk contests aren’t my thing, I said that last year. There’s a lot of guys that can put on a great show and do some good stuff. Last year was hectic and it kind of made it unenjoyable.”
I hate to see Grif back down, but his comments can’t be ignored. This is one time that fans would love to to see commissioner David Stern step in and do some type of collusion so that fans would get to see these two great superstars really go at it in a slam dunk competition, but it looks like it just may not happen.
