Shonn Greene believes Tebow should start

With a 3-6 record the New York Jets have the most divided locker room in the NFL. A day after teammate Matt Slauson and other anonymous teammates expressed their disdain and lack of belief in Tim Tebow as the potential answer to get things turned around for the team this season, Shonn Greene took a contrarian approach. The running back believes Tebow might provide the team with a spark and should start.

According to Michael Silver at Yahoo Sports,during a recent interview, Greene stated, “When you get to the point where you’re 3-6, and losing and losing, a couple of guys are like, ‘What would happen (if Tebow played)? We’re not here to protect people’s feelings. If you want to win games, you’ve got to try something. If somebody’s not getting the job done, you see if somebody else can do it. It’s the same with coaching, or any position. You don’t mean to belittle someone or say ‘he sucks.’ That’s just the harsh reality.”

These statements indicate that the intuitive running back saw that with Tebow as the starter last season the Denver Broncos’ offense became the number one rushing attack in the NFL, particularly, the emergence of Willis McGahee and believes the Jets could mirror that success this season. Differing opinions is not always the worse thing on a losing team, but this locker room is on the verge of exploding now that you have players like Greene going against not only the feelings of other teammates, but also Tony Sparano and Rex Ryan concerning whether Tebow should be starting.

Even, if Tebow is given a chance to start and does have some success, he definitely will be looking at his decision to join the Jets in the off season negatively because he could have never imagined a scenario where he would only throw the ball 6 times in nine games. Hopefully, the Jaguars will welcome him with open arms when he is likely released after the season.

R.A. Dickey wins Cy Young award

After posting a career best 20-6 record with a 2.73 era, coupled with a league-leading 230 strikeouts, R.A. Dickey was awarded the Cy Young Award for the 2012 MLB season. At 38 years old, he now faces an uncertain future filled with questions.

Will he return to the Mets next season, if he does not receive a 3-year contract? What adjustments will hitters make to his pitching style next season?

The one thing that will remain unchanged is his work ethic. Commenting on his determination to keep winning, Dickey during an interview with The Star Ledger stated, ““I always did hope for things that seemed unattainable to most. And those are the things that kept driving me to want to be better.”

Hopefully, the Mets will find a way to keep the superstar knuckleballer in uniform next season.

After watching the Detroit Tigers come up short in the World Series, Torii Hunter believes he just might be the offensive spark to help this team get over the hump next season.

According to ESPN, Hunter has agreed to a two-year deal worth $26 million.

This signing is the biggest of the off season so far and the superstar outfielder should blend his talents well into a lineup that includes Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder.

At age 37, he will serve as excellent mentor for younger players and will be motivated to prove any skeptics wrong, who believe his .313 hitting average was a fluke last season.

Teammate Matt Slauson calls Tebow “terrible”

The days of “All He Does Is Win” may be over for Tim Tebow, at the least his time in New York may be over after left guard Matt Slauson did not hide his evaluation of the quarterback’s practice performance and overall ability this season by bluntly stating “He’s terrible. ” Apparently inside runs for two and three yards during games, inaccurate throws during practices, poor 7 on 7 performances, being a punt protect specialist, just don’t inspire lineman the way they use to.

Tebow is quickly losing the respect of his peers and it is very apparent that Tony Sparano has absolutely no confidence in him. With the Jets virtually out of the playoff race, Tebow has to be desperately hoping to be released or traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, so at the least he can try to get some measure of redemption.

Every year in the NFL, a player is awarded the dubious distinction of the fastest falloff, past recipients include Shaun Alexander and Shawns Merriman. This year the award belongs to Tim Tebow, but on a bright side since he is spending so much time in Hollywood, don’t be surprised if you can’t go watch him at your local theatre in the off season.

With Michael Vick out for this week’s game with concussion issues and litany of other injuries, are his days in Philly over?

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Jason Cole wrote Monday, ”it’s a pretty strong bet” Vick will be rested for the balance of the regular season.

If Michael Vick is released at the end of the season, there are lot of questions surrounding the much maligned quarterback that must be answered. Can he stay healthy for 16 games? Can he stop turning the ball over so much? Is he a decent leader? With these type of questions surrounding Vick, it will likely reduce his fair market value, but here are the 3 best new teams for the quarterback going forward.

Oakland Raiders
The Raiders’ organization have always loved players with exceptional talent, speed, and a little bit of a checkered past. With Carson Palmer not exactly fitting the bill, it probably is time to move on, if the team were to throw Vick into a lineup that features Darren McFadden, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Denarius Moore, hopefully a rejuvenated Jacoby Ford next year, and a bigger role for Taiwan Jones next season, this offense would make plenty of explosive plays. Vick loves to throw the ball deep and his presence behind center places plenty of pressure on opposing defenses. He might be the insertion to get this team consistently winning again. The silver and black is the best and ideal fit for Vick.

New England Patriots
Tom Brady is still the leader of the team, but just envision what could happen to opposing defenses if Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels insert a Wildcat package, add some reverses, or even make Vick a wide receiver from time to time along with the world class speed of Jeff Demps on the field at the same time. This idea was initially proposed by Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin and it just may be time for the organization to think outside of the box. With Vick becoming more of a situational quarterback in this scenario, he would be more inclined to stay healthy and I think he could definitely add an element that would make the Pats’ offense even more prolific.

San Francisco 49ers
The specialty of Jim Harbaugh is building relationships, while instilling confidence in the player he coaches. The job he has done with Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, and Alex Smith is amazing. When the organization did not find a way to sign Peyton Manning in the offseason, it was a mistake that possibly cost this team a serious opportunity to win the Superbowl. If this organization was to sign Vick, it would be an upgrade over Smith, he would provide the team with a more dangerous runner than Colin Kapernick for Wildcat situations, could be signed below fair market value, and would be motivated to prove he is still an elite quarterback. Vick is capable of helping the 49ers win a Superbowl.

Enough was enough.

Rumors had Phil Jackson demanding a significant role in personnel decisions, Pippen and Shaw as assistants, travel restrictions and a $10-$15 million salary.

Despite numerous attempts, the Lakers couldn’t meet Jackson’s demands. With Jackson out of the picture, the Lakers had to move on and moved on they did.

According to ESPN, the Lakers have come to terms with coach Mike D’Antoni on four-year deal.

The hiring reunites the coach with his former MVP point guard Steve Nash, who talked about the possibility of playing for his former coach.

“Obviously I think everyone knows how much I love Mike,” Nash said. “If (D’Antoni) were to coach, it would be seamless and terrific for me, and I think the team as well.”

Coach D’Antoni, who is recovering from knee surgery should join the team in few days.

Who’s The Lakers Next Coach? Phil, Sloan or Shaw?

Confusion in Lakerland, not a surprise with so many new pieces to the puzzle in Dwight Howard, Steve Nash, and Antawn Jamison. But to fire Mike Brown five games into a season without a definitive plan seems just a little hasty. Despite Nash being hurt and Howard is playing at a reported 60 to 70 percent.

Rumors have been circulating that the next head coach may be Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan, or Brian Shaw.

All three could be decent fits, but only one man solves the Lakers short and long term coaching issue.

Phil Jackson Return
Obviously if the team can woo Jackson back into the fold, then it is full speed ahead. Jackson is the man who all players universally respect around the league and would blend these team together quick. The only negative being that Phil is a short term solution and he makes it tougher to keep Howard in a Laker uniform, when he has yet to sign a long term contract extension with the team. With a the coaching position unsettled, the chances of signing Howard seems less likely.

Regardless, even if the Lakers wanted Jackson to come back. Would he even be motivated to help this organization, after he was in the mind of many somewhat forced out? If the team signs him, it will be fun to see how this season plays out.

Jerry Sloan
When I first heard Jerry Sloan’s name I was kind of surprised. Sloan, a tough minded coach, always has his team playing with a certain tenacity, but after not being able to handle Deron Williams well in Utah, he would likely struggle to manage Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, and Dwight Howard in the same locker room. Although, Sloan is seasoned, he does not give the organization a long term coaching solution. I do think he would be motivated to win a championship ring, which is important, but does he really fit the culture? Maybe, maybe not. Worth a look, but I don’t think he becomes the next head coach of the team.

Brian Shaw
How much does the Lakers’ fan base trust Kobe? Probably a lot, he initially endorsed Brian Shaw, which is a strong indication that Shaw may be the long term solution for the Lake Show. I don’t know if he is capable of blending and managing all the egos currently on the team, but having Kobe on board is never a bad start. I see no huge negatives in overpaying a little to bring Shaw back from the Indiana Pacers as he solves the Lakers’ short and long term coaching issue. The only negative is that he is largely unproven, but many insiders feel that he is highly underrated. I like to see him land the job.

Bernie Bickerstaff in the Short Term
It seems almost impossible for one of the top organizations in sports, not to have a plan in place for a head coach, but that is exactly what has happened. I wish Mike Brown the best going forward because I thought he was not given enough time to make things work in Lakerland; however, whoever becomes the next head coach, the one thing we know for sure is they will not be running the Princeton offense. Good luck to Bernie Bickerstaff in the short term.

3 reasons Lakers should not fire Mike Brown

It is no secret that Mike Brown has the tendency to look confused on the sidelines at times, especially, when he can’t seem to get his team to play up to their potential. Despite the confused look, he should still be given a couple of seasons more to try and lead this team to a championship.

I am no big fan of the Princeton offense as it has largely contributed to why JT III at Georgetown has consistently coached his team over the last few years into poor late postseason performances with recent losses to Ohio, VCU, and North Carolina State. It is certainly not the right offense for each team’s personnel. I think Mike Brown will be forced to tweak the offense at some point this season if he ever expects to maximize Steve Nash’s ability for the team. Despite some of the negative, here are 3 reasons not to fire Mike Brown.

Defense, Defense, Defense

For those Lakers’ fans reminiscing for the days of Showtime, unfortunately it is over, or perhaps it is time to become a Clippers’ fan. The reality is the Lakers’ blueprint for success will be eerily similar to their archrival the gritty Boston Celtics. Mike Brown is regarded by many insiders as a defensive specialist, and this team will go as far as the defensive Big Three take them of Metta World Peace, Kobe, and Dwight Howard. There is not a more versatile group of defenders in the NBA and when locked in they can force superstars like Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder or LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh from the Miami Heat into taking poor shots. The Lakers will be a definite top ten defensive team by season’s end and Mike Brown will make that happen.

Win At Least 50 Games

Although, the Lakers lost the first few games of the season, the reality is that this team will easily win at least 50 games, so there is no need to panic in Laker-land. In the first two games, Kobe only shot seven free throws, which demonstrates he was not driving as much against opposing defenses in an effort to run the offense, but most importantly making sure that Howard feels an integral part of the offense. Since Kobe did not public endorse the hiring of Brown, it was a perceived slight, but it appears so far this season, that the two at least for now have a healthy respect of one another. With at least 50 wins this season the Lakers should be a top 3 seed in the West, but more importantly I think Mike Brown will prove to fans and management, that he is the right coach to lead this team.

Motivation

Kobe wants to win his sixth championship. Dwight Howard and Steve Nash both want to win their first championship. While, Mike Brown knows he can never replace Pat Riley or Phil Jackson, he wants to silence all of the skepticism and detractors from outsiders who deem him not to be the right coach of this organization. It would be virtually impossible to find a more motivated coach than Brown right now. Once, he gets this team playing elite defense, they should find themselves rightfully back on top of the NBA.

Rockets, Harden agree on 5-years $80 million contract

League sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard, the Houston Rockets agreed with guard James Harden on a five-year, $80 million contract Wednesday.

The deal came four days after the Rockets pulled off a stunning trade to acquire Harden from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Is LeBron James the most confusing athlete of all time? Possibly.

Just when the world thought they knew him, a 6’8 260 pound freakishly athletic player who really up to this point in his career has not embraced late game pressure that well, but finally managed to win a championship ring last season.

James shocked the world in a recent interview by stating, “I want to be the best of all time. It’s that simple.” It goes without saying that for the most part he really has not handled pressure that well up to this point his career, but this statement will force his critics to place even more scrutiny on every decision he makes on and off the court.

Does this mean, he will start taking the last shot of the game on a consistent basis? That would be shocking.

Is he going to approach each basketball game with the same mental intensity as Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan? This would be absolutely surprising to even his most ardent supporters.

Or do these statements increase the likelihood, that James is seriously considering leaving the Miami Heat in 2014? Probably because as long as he is on the team regarded as the most talented coupled with being the overwhelming favorite to win the NBA championship each season, from a perception standpoint it will be almost impossible for him to claim to be the best.

It is great for fans across the world of the team that King James seems extremely focused heading into the season and it will be even more fascinating to see if he can live up to his own statements.

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Friday, the first operation of his 14-year NBA career.

Nowitzki, 34, said earlier this week that doctors told him the typical timetable to return from such an operation is three to six weeks, which means it’s almost certain that he will miss the beginning of the regular season.

With this, also, being Nowitzki first major surgery it is very unsure how he’ll respond.

Nike, Armstrong split after doping allegation

Nike has split with Lance Armstrong after the cyclist stepped down as chairman of the LiveStrong Foundation.

According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, Nike, announced Wednesday that it has terminated its endorsement deal with Armstrong.

“Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him,” the company said in a statement. “Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in any manner. Nike plans to continue support of the Livestrong initiatives created to unite, inspire and empower people affected by cancer.”

Armstrong is on a short list of athletes, which include Mike Vick and Tiger Woods to lose endorsement deal because of moral clauses in their contracts.

Armstrong’s other sponsors including Oakley, Honey Stinger and FRS have thus far continued to support the embattled cyclist.

It’s the second time A-Rod has been benched this postseason. He’s been horrific going 3 for 26 in the playoffs so far, including 0 for 18 with 12 strikeouts against right-handers.

Swisher hasn’t been much better than Rodriguez, going 4 for 26 this postseason.

Eric Chavez starts at third base in place of Rodriguez. Brett Gardner is leading off and playing left field, making his first start since April 1.

This will give Alex more time to hit on the ladies in the stands.

Darrelle Revis vows to return to form for 2013 season

New York Jets all-pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, will have surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, predicted he will return to his all-pro form for the 2013 season.

“Once I get back to 100 percent, to me there’s no question I (will) be back to where I was,” Revis said, commenting for the first time since suffering the season-ending injury three weeks ago in Miami.

Revis will have to prove he can return from the injury, especially if he wants to secure a long term contract.

The 27-year-old cornerback is signed through the 2013 season after signing an extension a four-year, $46 million contract in 2010.

Typically, it takes a little over a year to recover from an ACL injury. However, other athletes have come back sooner.

Revis said he should be jogging in 12 to 16 weeks.

Miami Heat have two rosters spots available

The Heat are back in Miami after their world tour of China.

Players are resting, however, Spoelstra is busy at work determining his clubs final roster spots. The Heat currently have 20 players on the preseason roster and will need to trim it to 15 by Oct. 29. Of the 20 players 13 have guaranteed contracts, that leaves two spots for some restless prospects.

The seven players are centers Mickell Gladness and Josh Harrellson; forwards Rodney Carney, Robert Dozier and Jarvis Varnado; and guards Terrel Harris and Garrett Temple.

Personally, I like Josh Harrellson — a big body center — who can bang down low and stretch the floor with his shooting touch to clear space for Lebron James and Dwyane Wade.

As for the last spot, that’s a toss up between Terrel Harris who has been with the club the past few years and Rodney Carney a journeyman who played really well China.
